"Go ahead, make my day."

Now, if you did not say the title in your best Clint Eastwood voice, I'm going to need you to stop reading right now and say it like he did in Dirty Harry.

No, seriously, do it! Even if you haven't seen the movie (like me) you know how he says it, so go ahead!

Wasn't that fun? :P

Now, you may commence reading! :)

So a couple weeks ago my friend Leslie invited me to join her and some other ladies for a "Basics of Pistol Shooting Class."  I was very apprehensive to go, because, 1) I am scared to death of guns, 2) people would be holding guns around me, and 3) guns scare me!  See a pattern?  But after talking to my husband, we decided that for these reasons it was probably best that I go ahead and take the class, so I could get comfortable with a gun, and learn more about them from a professsional.  So this past thursday was the day, Leslie picked me up, and we headed to the dreaded (at least for me) pistol class.  We arrived just on time (after some major detours, thanks Ayden!), and entered the beautiful home of our instructor, Gordon Jones.  He is a associate pastor in Ayden, NC, but has his own business as well. This is his card -
(Loved his card, so I thought I would share, and if you are interested in taking a 'Basics of Pistol Shooting' class you will have the information!)

He was a very nice, and made sure that all of us felt comfortable every step of the way.  He opened up the class by asking each of us why we were there, and what our previous experience with guns were; I guess so he could get a feel for how to teach and handle all seven of us women.  He taught us about two guns specifically, a revolver and a 9mml semi automatic, he broke them both down and explained all the intricate parts of each - how to load and unload, what ammuntion they use, how the bullet travels through, and how to safely handle them.

His drilled three MAIN rules into us...
1) ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction
2) ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
3) ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
Buddy, by the end of the class, we KNEW those rules!

He also showed us how to stand when shooting a gun, how to aim the gun, and also how to shoot it. (He even had fake guns for each of us to practice with, top notch Mr. Jones!) You would be surprised at how many things you need to know in order to safely shoot and handle a gun.
(This picture is of the waver you had to sign, fake bullets, and two lovely ladies, Dede and Leslie, learning how to load a magazine and put it into the 9mml)

So after he felt that we had all the head knowledge we could get about guns, he took us out back to his homemade shooting range.  Now, through the entire class I was apprehensive about shooting, I flenched, sighed, gasped, and held my breath through each explanation and demonstration. (I told you, terrified! And if you dont believe me you can ask all six of the ladies that took it with me!)  So, as we were heading out back to actually shoot the guns, I had huge, monsterous butterflies in my stomach!
We got out there and he showed us what our target would be, a ten inch paper plate, from 21ft away! All  I could think was, YEAH RIGHT!? So one by one, each of the ladies would take turn shooting the Glock 9mml, and you better believe each of them was hitting the target! Don't mess with the women of Beaufort County! So then it was my turn, I was, you guessed it, terrified, but Gordon (we were on a first name basis at this point) talked me through it.  The first shot it took was intense, I think i stood there for 30 seconds just trying to take it in, but after that intial shot I got really into it! And by the end of my turn I had hit the plate eight times out of ten! BOOOOOYAHAHA!!  I was pumped! Plus, if you know me you know I'm super competitive! :)
(My plate!)

(The rest of the ladies, and their plates!) (And yes, I shot my gun in a jean skirt and cute polka dotted top - you know how I roll!)

So, after all was said and done, I had learned a lot and actually enjoyed shooting!  He was a GREAT teacher! He made you feel comfortable and secure in every thing you were doing and learning! I would highly recommend him.  And hopefully I will be seeing him again for a concealed weapons class soon! Tentatively November 16, in Beaufort County, check it out!

So, thank you Leslie Smith for inviting me, the rest of the ladies for helping to support my crazy scared self, and Gordon for teaching me all I needed to know! Looking forward to next time!
